The Game takes place in the city of Rio de Janeiro in the same events of the film, and the enemy changes completely. However using the same basic gameplay as the original game, Angry Birds Rio added a number of new elements, especially the first use of boss levels.

Gameplay and exclusive features
In this new game one of the objectives of the game was changed for the first time. The main target went from being the evil, green pigs, to being the weak, caged birds that were smuggled. When all of these were released in the first episode, the target was once again an enemy; the marmosets that wanted to catch the Angry Birds.
In the game 2 exclusive new birds are introduced: Blue and Pearl. They are 2 characters from the movie that make their appearance in the game. They have unique abilities: Blue, despite being a bird, does not know how to fly, and all he does is move his wings and scare away materials near him; Perla, his girlfriend, who does know how to fly, but who is chained to Blue, so her special ability is similar to that of the Yellow Bird: to fly straight forward, with Blue dragging.
As of version 2.0 of the game, changes were made to the game graphics, making all the birds have the appearance of Angry Birds Toons, as well as in the game menu dividing it into two parts, referring to the movie "Rio 2".

Discontinuation and removal of the game
On February 3, 2020, the announcement was made that Angry Birds Rio, like Angry Birds Star Wars and Angry Birds Star Wars II, would be suspended from the app stores, this due to a possible licensing problem. Since Lucasfilm Ltd., the creator of the Star Wars franchise, was bought and acquired by The Walt Disney Company, as well as 20th Century Fox, the studio that created the Rio films. If someone tries to download the game using an APK on Android or jailbreaking iOS, or if you already had it installed, you will get an ad that is redirected to Angry Birds 2.

Curiosities
- On the title screen, when the music increases, Red and Blu start to hear it and move up and down as if they are dancing to the beat.
- In the "Angry Birds Rio Nigel Mashup" video, all the birds except Bubbles and Stella were caged. Also, in the video, Hal and Matilda had their original aspects of the game.
- Bubbles and Stella did not appear when this game was released, instead they were available until the episodes Smuggler's Plane (featuring Bubbles) and Rocket Rumble (featuring Stella) were released.
- In the icon, it shows the way Red opens his mouth from Classic and Seasons. But in the actual game, the way Red opens his mouth is the Chrome version.
- In this game, the Marmoset Monkeys and Caged Birds replaced the Piglets as targets, they never appeared in the game. The only exception is in the final cutscenes of the episode Smuggler's Plane. Whiskers and a Satin Pig try to steal the eggs when suddenly the Birds crash the plane and reunite with the eggs, and the Little Pigs are hiding from the birds.
- After the release of the episode "Smuggler's Plane", Rovio announced that this is not the end of Angry Birds Rio. Rovio mentioned that one day new levels will be created based on deleted scenes and extras from the Rio movie.
- At the end of Carnival Upheaval, Blu is captured by Nigel. However, Blu appears occasionally in later levels.
- When you complete a level, the words about the stars say instead of. This was fixed in version 1.7.0, and now it says, and the new high score format has changed to the Angry Birds and Angry Birds Seasons formats with bolder lettering, and now shows a very happy Red Bird.
- At Carnival Upheaval, some balloons look like little pigs. When they appear, they give you 5000 points, and use the original Angry Birds graphics 5000 points.
- On December 18, 2012, Angry Birds Rio was updated with four Power-Ups. The first is Super Seeds, the second is the Sling Scope, but with a different icon (in the Power-Up icon it has a marmoset instead of a pig), the third (which is new) is called TNT Drop, the last It is called Samba Burst, also new, exclusive to Rio. This poteciador will replace the bird in turn in the slingshot with Red with a fruit hat and, once launched and hits an obstacle, it will make him dance and destroy more of the structure. Additionally, 24 new levels were released, along with Mighty Eagle on Android devices. Some of the levels are unlocked with a certain number of stars in the levels of each episode, while others are unlocked by matching 10 feathers with the Mighty Eagle in each episode.
- Angry Birds Rio is the first Angry Birds crossover game, as it is a crossover with Rio. The second is Angry Birds Star Wars, a crossover with the original Star Wars trilogy, the third is Angry Birds Star Wars, a crossover with the Star Wars prequel trilogy, and the fourth is Angry Birds Transformers, a crossover with the Transformers series.
- After the 1.7.0 update, the game is now free, and Angry Birds Rio Free and Angry Birds Rio Free in HD had been removed from the app store.
- This game has many new features. It is the first game where the birds do not attack the pigs. It is the first game to feature bosses moving all over the place. It is also the second game to have the characters in its Angry Birds Toons sprites during its Rio 2 update, being Angry Birds Go! the first, the third is Angry Birds Epic, and the fourth is Angry Birds Stella.
- As of the Rio 2 update, it doesn't appear that all birds have flashing animations in Rio 1 levels.
- Shakira Bird was going to appear in the game which was going to have the power to lift objects with heart-shaped bubbles as a replacement for Stella but she never ended up appearing in the game.
