Apex Legends was launched by surprise on February 4. It is a "battle royale" developed by Respawn Entertainment and based on the Titanfall universe. It is a very solid FPS, with a futuristic setting full of details and that promises to become one of the phenomena of the year (in just two days it has achieved an impressive figure of 2.500.000 unique players, and more than 600.000 simultaneous). The game from Electronic Arts and Respawn is available for PS4, Xbox One, and PC ... and like its main competitor, Fortnite, it's free.
Comparisons between the two titles are inevitable, but what is better Apex Legends than Fortnite. Here we analyze some of the differences in which the new FPS comes out better. 1. The heroes
While in Fortnite we control an "anonymous hero" in which we can simply change the external appearance, Apex Legends presents us with 8 different characters. In this sense, the game works as a "hero shooter" (in the vein of Overwatch, from Activision Blizzard) in that each of the players has their own abilities, and even a defined personality. Of course, we can unlock different aspects for each of the legends - cosmetic improvements are the way the game is financed - but the most important thing is in the abilities of each character.
Each legend has a passive ability, an active one (which we shoot with R1) and a special one (R1 + L1) that can be unbalancing on the battlefield. As in Overwatch, the story behind each of the legends is the most argumentative part of Apex Legends. 2. A tutorial
It may seem too obvious at this point (particularly after Fortnite, PUBG, Call of Duty Black Ops 4, H1Z1 ...) but it is appreciated that we have a tutorial to familiarize ourselves with the mechanics of Apex Legends. It's simple, but in a few minutes it makes it very clear to us the mechanics that are repeated: finding supplies, weapons (and their modifications), staying within the circle ... and also those that are exclusive to this game, in particular the system of resurrection of companions, the communications or the use of the specials of each legend.
3. Navigation
It may be a matter of taste, but Apex Legends is a faster game than Fortnite, and also incorporates a more agile map navigation. For starters, everything learned with Titanfall is present at launch (except for the appearance of the Titans and the possibility of running through the walls). But we do find a much more vertical game, which manages to take advantage of the layout of the map (for now the only map available is King's Canyon).
In this sense, without the need to use vehicles, the possibility of sliding in the race, launching skidding down a slope -without losing momentum- or gaining greater speed in the sprint is appreciated when we put the weapon away. Navigation is also affected by the abilities of some legends. This is the case with Pathfinder, which can use a grapple to move faster or climb to higher floors. Also in reverse, Apex Legends allows us to fall from a considerable height without receiving damage. In general, as in Titanfall, mastery of movement is decisive for victory.

4. Visual section
There is also a personal preferences component here. Many times we have praised the fortnite design for being attractive to all audiences. The lack of blood, the dances and emotes, and the animated designs make it suitable for a wide range of players. But in this case, Apex Legends has given us a very pleasant surprise. The design of the characters has "hook" and the technical section in general is very remarkable.
The evolution of motor Source Engine that we saw in Titanfall 2 allows a very fluid pacing, at 60 FPS, with a great response from the weapons. Once we load the textures in HD (we just have to wait a few minutes after downloading the game), the truth is that it looks very good. It is solid, with varied locations and good effects, that put it above Fortnite, and almost on the level of the environments of Call of Duty Blackout.

5. Cooperation
Meanwhile in Fortnite Battle Royale the star game mode is a "free for all" for 100 players in which the winner is the last one standing, in Apex Legends It is played by squads of three men (or women). The games are 60 players and the cooperation between players is enhanced with some very interesting resources, such as the fact that we choose our legends in succession, after our teammates have chosen.
Another resource that we like is the possibility of using fast communication commands (we point with the cursor, and when pressing R1 we indicate that there is something of interest. If we press it twice we indicate the position of an enemy). And the deployment as a team, so that we fall next to the platoon leader, instead of being scattered around the map, when jumping from the Fortnite bus. It should also be noted that the team play mode allows support characters, such as the medic or the tank, whose abilities can be shared.
For the end, we left the most innovative: the possibility of taking the shield of a fallen colleague and taking it to a resurrection beacon to reappear. in this way, the style of play is more strategic.
